Is Corfu expensive?

Less than its reputation suggests. Corfu carries a slightly grand name and a Venetian old town, which leads people to expect high prices. It does not work out that way, with one significant exception at the top end.

Why it comes in cheaper than it looks

Scale is the reason. Corfu is a large island with a busy airport, a long charter history and a lot of beds, so getting here and finding somewhere to sleep are both competitive in a way they are not on a small island served by a single ferry route. Nothing has to be shipped a long way; the island grows its own olive oil, wine and most of what appears on a taverna table.

The other factor is that the good version of Corfu is not the expensive version. An old-town apartment, a bus to a beach, a boat day and a table on a square is an excellent week and a modest one. The island does not force spending on you the way a small resort island can.

Where the money actually goes

Three places, and none of them is your dinner.

The first is a villa on the north-east coast in high summer, which is a genuinely expensive market and prices like the private-house market it belongs to rather than like a Greek island. The second is the water: any day spent on a boat is a large line in a Corfu budget, and it is also a day people remember. The third is the car — hire, fuel and the sheer slowness of the roads, which quietly converts a cheap base into an expensive one if you have picked somewhere that needs driving.

Splurge

Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa — a five-star hillside resort on the east coast, infinity pool, spa with hammam, and its own beach area below the terraces. At this tier the sensible pairing is the Corfu Private Yacht Cruise, a sail yacht held for the day with the coast reached under sail rather than over a beach-club queue. Two large decisions, both worth their cost, and very little else to spend on.

Mid-range

Divani Corfu Palace — a four-star garden hotel on the quiet southern side of Corfu Town, with a seasonal pool and the old town along the shore. Pair it with the Small Group Corfu Gastronomy Tour, which is an honest route into what the island actually eats. This tier makes a persuasive case on value: grounds, a pool, walkable evenings, and no car required.

Good value

Apartment Annunziata — soundproofed, air-conditioned, on a Venetian street inside the old town. Add the Guided Sailing Yacht Trip in Corfu Island, a shared day under sail, and the week costs very little while still including two things worth having here: the evenings and the water. Comparing current stay and experience options early is worth the effort, because shoulder-season pricing moves a long way on Corfu.

The short answer

Corfu is expensive if you want a private house on the quiet coast in August and a boat to yourself. It is inexpensive if you want a good room in a beautiful town, a shared deck, and a table where the locals eat. Both are the same island, and the gap between them is wide.
