Corfu in May

May is a month to come to Corfu for the land rather than the water. The island is still green, the interior is walkable in the middle of the day, and almost everything that runs on a season has either opened or is days from it — but the sea has not caught up with the air, and nothing about a warm afternoon changes that.

What the month is doing

The Ionian's winter rain has largely finished its work by May, and what it leaves behind is the reason to be here: hills that are still properly green, ground with water in it, and olive terraces not yet dusty. Days are warm without being punishing, evenings ask for a jacket after dark, and the light runs later every week. In May the island looks like the north of Europe rather than the south.

The water, honestly

Sea temperature lags air temperature by weeks, and in May the lag is the whole story. Water in May is swimmable rather than pleasant — a short swim and a towel, not an afternoon in the shallows. Sheltered bays on the east side, which sit in calmer water and shelve gently, come round sooner than the open western beaches. Anyone whose week is built on swimming should take June instead.

The staggered opening is the thing to plan around

Corfu Town works all year and does not care what month it is. Its coast is another matter. Hotels, beach tavernas and the smaller boat operators come back on their own schedules through spring, so the first half of May can find a stretch of coast half-awake, with one taverna open and its neighbour still shuttered. By the end of the month that has resolved almost everywhere. If your stay depends on a particular strip of coast being fully running, weight your dates towards the back of May.

Walking is the real argument

The old paths between the hill villages predate the coast road, and May is when they are worth the effort — shaded, green, and comfortable at an hour that would be unthinkable in August. Sections of the island's long spine can be walked in a morning, the wildflowers are still going on the higher ground, and the villages along the way are open for lunch without a queue. By high summer the same routes are dawn-only propositions.

Who should take a different month

Anyone who wants to swim properly every day. Anyone who wants the full programme of boats, excursions and late tavernas that only assembles once the season is fully open.
