Corfu in September

September trades certainty for quality. The water is still carrying the heat the summer put into it, the resort strips have emptied out, and the light through the olive groves is worth seeing — against which you accept that one afternoon in your week might be taken away from you by the sky.

What leaves, and in what order

Corfu thins in a sequence rather than all at once, and knowing the order is most of the planning. Families with school-age children go first, which takes the pressure off the shallow east-coast bays almost overnight. Charter volume follows, so flights and hire cars loosen. The season itself goes last: coast tavernas and the smaller boat operators keep working well past the point at which the beaches have emptied, so the back half of the month is quiet without being shut.

That sequence is why September behaves so differently from May, which is quiet for the opposite reason — spring is quiet because the island has not started, autumn because it has finished being busy.

The water is the payoff

Sea temperature here lags the air by weeks in both directions, and in autumn that lag works for you. September water is far warmer than anything spring offers, with the year's peak just behind it rather than ahead — long, unhurried swims rather than the short bracing ones of May. For anyone whose week is built around being in the sea, this is the argument that settles the month.

The sky is the risk

Ionian autumn arrives as storms rather than as drizzle: short, heavy and usually over by the following morning. Early in the month they are unlikely; by the last week they are a reasonable thing to expect at least once. None of that ruins a stay, but it does change how a stay should be arranged.

The island gets its interior back

August pushes everyone onto the coast. September hands the rest of Corfu back — the hill villages, the ridge routes, the olive terraces that are working towards their harvest rather than sitting idle. Midday is comfortable again, the roads over the spine are not queuing behind hire cars, and a village lunch stops being a competition. This is the half of the island most summer visitors never see, and it is open for another month.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Couples and anyone travelling without a school calendar to answer to. Swimmers. Anyone who wants Corfu Town in the evening without a cruise crowd in it. Walkers get a better month than August and a warmer sea than May.

Look at June instead if the week has to be weatherproof, if it must sit at the longest end of the year's light, or if a fixed programme of boats and excursions matters more than an empty beach.
