How many days do you need in Corfu?

Five full days is the honest answer, and a week if you mean to see both halves of the island properly. Three is enough only if you stay put and treat the trip as a town break with swimming attached. That is a longer stay than most Greek islands need, and the reason is not that Corfu has more to see — it is that Corfu is harder to move around than its size on a map suggests.

Why the number runs higher here

Two things push it up. The island is long, and the roads that run its length are narrow and slow, so a return trip to the far end is a day rather than an outing. And the north-east coves, the west-coast beaches and the Venetian town are genuinely different holidays rather than variations on one, which means a trip that tries to touch all three from a single base spends its time driving between them.

Short stays fail here in a specific way. They do not run out of things to do; they run out of the day.

What each length buys

The shape of a five-day stay

Give the town two nights at the front, when you are still willing to walk in the heat and want to eat somewhere with choice. Move to the coast for the remaining three. Keep one of them entirely free of driving — a beach and a long lunch — because the day you do not plan is generally the one people remember, and Corfu punishes an over-scheduled week harder than a small island does.

A boat day belongs in any stay of five nights or more. The coastline reads completely differently from the water, and several coves on the north-east are awkward to reach any other way.

When to split the stay

Splitting earns its keep from about five nights upward and not below. Two bases on a three-day trip means one afternoon lost to packing and driving out of a stay that only had three afternoons in it. On a week it is the obvious move, and the natural division is the town at one end of the trip and the coast at the other, in whichever order suits your flights.

The point of diminishing returns

A fortnight is not wasted here — the interior is real, the walking is real, and there is a version of this holiday that is simply a house, a car and no plans. But the second week adds depth rather than new ground, so it suits people who wanted a rest rather than an itinerary.

What pushes the answer shorter

Coming in the shoulder months shortens it slightly, because the roads are quieter and the drives take less out of the day. Basing yourself in the town shortens it too, since everything urban is then on foot. And travelling without a car halves the island's practical size: the buses are usable but they are not quick, and a carless trip is best planned around one coast rather than the whole of Corfu.
