Corfu

Corfu confuses people who arrive expecting Greece. Cypresses and olive terraces run down to the water in a green the Cyclades never manage; arcaded streets, shuttered façades and bell towers in the old town owe more to the Adriatic than the Aegean; and the whole island reads, at first glance, like somewhere considerably further north-west. Centuries under Venetian rule left a permanent accent, and nobody has tried very hard to lose it.

Green for a reason nobody puts on a postcard

Rain is the explanation. Ionian islands catch weather the Aegean does not, and Corfu spends its winters getting properly wet. What that buys a summer visitor is shade, birdsong, olive groves running past the horizon, and hillsides still green in September rather than bleached to gold by June.

It also means the island holds several holidays at once. Sheltered coves along the north-east, long sandy stretches down the west coast, a working city with real architecture on the east coast, and mountain villages where the sea is a rumour. Few Greek islands ask you to choose between so many different weeks.

When to come

May, June and September are the months to target. Spring here is properly lush — wildflowers, cool mornings, water that takes a moment of courage — while September delivers warm sea, thinned crowds and the year's most forgiving light.

Couples usually favour late May or September. Both sidestep the midsummer pattern of charter flights and full beaches, and both leave the old town walkable at noon rather than something to be endured. Olive groves run through all of it, and the light falling through them in late September does something no midsummer month manages.

Is Corfu expensive?

Among the better-value Greek islands, largely because it has been receiving visitors long enough that every tier of accommodation now exists here. Charter access keeps the range wide and the entry point low.

One exception matters. Along the north-east coast, a run of sheltered bays has drawn a genuinely upper-end villa market, and that stretch behaves like a different island altogether. Elsewhere — the old town, the west coast, the interior — Corfu stays reasonable even in season.

A villa or small resort on the north-east coast, with a private jetty, olive-shaded terraces and a boat on call. Seclusion and direct water access are the currency here, and the sheltered bays make swimming reliable rather than weather-dependent. Best for groups, families, or anyone planning to stay put and be thoroughly looked after.

The Mid-Tier Value Premium Selection

A restored townhouse inside the old town, or a boutique property above one of the quieter bays. Old-town stays are the island's underrated move: you wake up inside the architecture, eat well on foot, and hire a car only on days you actually want one. Couples who like a city as much as a coast should look hard here.

The Smart Entry-Level Option

An apartment in a village near the west-coast beaches, or simple rooms just outside the old town walls. Corfu's long tourism history means the budget end is well practised rather than improvised — reliable, friendly, close to a bus route. Whatever you save goes into boat hire and unhurried lunches.

What is worth the money

A day on the water along the north-east coast, where the bays only really open up from a boat. An afternoon lost among the old town's lanes and squares, which reward wandering more than any list of sights. A drive into the mountainous interior for lunch and a view back across the whole island. And an olive-grove or oil tasting, which finally explains the landscape you have been driving through all week.
