What that leaves you with

Neither a ruin nor a stage set: a walled town that people live in. Lanes inside carry laundry, scooters, school runs and a great many cats, and the working parts sit alongside the restored parts without ceremony. Telling one from the other improves the visit rather than spoiling it, because the stonework starts describing the last century as well as the ones before it. The walls enclose enough ground for quiet quarters as well as busy ones, and the crowd keeps to a couple of commercial spines.

Two coasts, and the wind between them

Rhodes runs long and narrow from a blunt northern tip, and the prevailing summer wind arrives on its western side. That produces a split island. West-facing shores are breezy, the water livelier, the beaches shingly and comparatively empty — this is where the boards and sails go. Eastern shores lie in the lee: calm water, sand, and most of the resort development.

Picking a side matters more than picking a hotel. Between them lies a mountainous, pine-covered interior of hill villages that see a fraction of the coastal traffic.

When to come

May, June, September and October all work, which is a wide window. Late spring is the island at its greenest, with wildflowers through the interior and the Old Town walkable in the middle of the day. Autumn trades the green for warm water: the sea holds its summer heat well into October, though the year's warmest swimming is behind you by then.

Couples tend to enjoy the autumn end, once the resort coast has quietened and dinner outside is still comfortable. Anyone planning to walk the interior should take May — the Old Town in high summer is a stone box that stores heat and gives it back after dark.

Is Rhodes expensive?

Less predictably than the reputation suggests, because two economies run side by side. Package resorts along the sheltered coast set a low floor and compete hard on it. At the other end, a small number of restored houses inside the walls sell scarcity and privacy, and price for it.

Much of the value sits between those poles. Eating well is straightforward almost anywhere here; the premium attaches to a view of the walls or a private stretch of beach, not to the food. Timing is a major variable — the same room in high summer and in early October are not remotely the same purchase.

Where to stay

Splurge

A restored medieval house inside the walls: courtyard, roof terrace over the rooftops, vaulted rooms that stay cool without effort. Rarity is the product, because such conversions are few and small, and sleeping inside a lived-in walled city is a different proposition from a beach resort. Best suited to travellers who came for the town rather than the sand.

Mid-range

A small hotel on the coast within a short drive of the Old Town, or a boutique property in an eastern village. Pool, sea access, a balcony, and a taxi to dinner inside the walls whenever the mood arrives. This tier gets both halves of the island, and most couples should be looking at it.

Good value

Rooms in the new town or a resort village on the sheltered coast, a short walk from a public beach. Buses reach most of the coast, the Old Town costs nothing to walk into, and the interior opens up the moment you hire a car. Not every good hour on the island is one you pay for.

What earns its keep

An unhurried day inside the walls, taken early or late rather than at midday, when low light shows what the stone is doing. A drive south to the acropolis village on its rock above a white town and a sheltered bay, which deserves an overnight rather than a coach stop. Then a slow crossing of the interior, where pine forest and monasteries replace the coast altogether.

Since a package week on the sheltered coast and a house inside the walls differ in every respect except the island you wake up on, comparing current stay and experience options carefully is time well spent.
