August works on Corfu in a way it does not work on the small Cycladic islands, and the reason is size. This is a long island with a great deal of coast, a mountainous north and an interior almost nobody visits, so the peak-month crowd concentrates rather than saturates. Book into the concentration and August is unpleasant. Book around it and the month is very good indeed.

The two things August genuinely gives you
Heat and water, and nothing else that another month cannot do better. This is the hottest, driest part of the Corfiot year — the rain that defines every other season is simply absent — and the sea sits at its annual peak, which is the one thing no shoulder month can offer. If the holiday is swimming, this is when the swimming is best.
Everything else about the month is a cost, and one of those costs is domestic rather than foreign. Mid-August is the Greek holiday peak, when the country moves to the islands in force and Corfu takes a large share of it. The fortnight around it is the tightest of the year for rooms, for ferries and for tables.
Buying your way out of the crowd
Money goes further in August than in any other month here, because what is scarce is not luxury but space. Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa steps down a wooded hillside on the east coast to a private beach area at the foot of the terraces, and a beach nobody has to arrive early for is worth more now than at any other point in the year.
On the water the equivalent is exclusivity rather than a better boat. The Corfu Private Yacht Cruise takes the day at the skipper's pace instead of a timetable's, which turns the crowded coves into a sequence of empty ones simply by arriving after the day-boats have gone.
There is a third option, and it inverts the whole calculation. Apartment Annunziata sits inside the old town with no pool and no beach, which sounds like the wrong August choice and is exactly right for anyone whose August is about evenings — the arcades after dark, dinner late, and the heat of the day treated as something to sleep through rather than to lie about in.
Who should not come in August
Walkers, first of all. The hills are the best thing about this island and they are punishing in this heat; May, or the far side of September, serves that trip far better, and the seasons page makes the comparison properly. Anyone chasing value should also look elsewhere, because rates are at their annual high and there is no argument to be made against that.
Everyone else: come, book early, and choose your part of the island deliberately rather than by price.
