Mykonos

Wind made this island what it is. The Meltemi comes down the Aegean through summer with real conviction, and every distinctive thing about Mykonos — squat whitewashed cubes built low against it, the row of windmills standing on the ridge above the harbour, beaches on one coast lying glassy while the opposite shore churns — is an answer to that wind. Understand it and the island stops being a rumour about nightlife and starts making sense.

An island that runs on a clock

Days and nights here belong to different places, and the handover is close to ritual. Sunlight hours drain toward the south coast, where beach clubs run loungers to the waterline and a sound system somewhere behind you keeps a steady pulse. Come evening, everything reverses and pours into Chora, the main town, where lanes are narrow enough that two people with shopping bags constitute a traffic event.

Neither half explains the other. Visitors who sample only one usually go home with a confident and incomplete opinion.

Choosing a coast before choosing a hotel

South-facing beaches sit in the island's lee and stay swimmable when the Meltemi is up. Northern shores take the full force of it, which is glorious for a walk and miserable on a lounger. This single fact should drive where you stay more than any review will.

Chora puts you inside the evening but a taxi ride from the sand. A south-coast base reverses that trade. Nothing here is genuinely far, though peak-season traffic can make short distances feel theoretical.

When to come

June and September are the island's two best months by a wide margin. Both deliver warm water and long light without the high-summer compression, and the Meltemi tends to be more polite at either end of the season. September holds the sea's accumulated heat and thins the lanes; June arrives fresher, greener and easier to move around.

Couples generally prefer September. Mykonos has stopped proving itself by then, restaurants have found their rhythm, and the light in Chora after dinner is lovely rather than merely photogenic. Early June works for travellers who want the same island with more energy and fewer bookings required.

Is Mykonos expensive?

It has the reputation, and in one specific window — peak weeks, front row at a south-coast beach club — it earns it. Sunbeds nearest the water are a scarce, tradeable commodity, and they are priced like one.

Away from that front row, Mykonos costs roughly what any well-visited Greek island costs. Move one street back in Chora, one row back on the sand, or a fortnight either side of peak, and the island becomes surprisingly reasonable while losing almost nothing that matters.

A cliffside villa-suite property on the south or west coast, with an infinity pool, a private cove or jetty, and a car sent to meet your ferry. Privacy is the real product here — public space on this island is loud by design, so the top tier sells the ability to opt out of it at will. Ideal for travellers who want the party available rather than compulsory.

The Mid-Tier Value Premium Selection

A design-led small hotel on the edge of Chora or above one of the southern bays. Pool, a breakfast worth getting up for, a walk to dinner, and none of the resort surcharge. Guests here keep both of the island's personalities within reach and retain enough budget to actually use them.

The Smart Entry-Level Option

A family-run studio in one of the inland villages, or simple rooms on the quieter side of town. Whitewashed, breezy, walk-or-bus to everything, and completely fine. Beaches are public, sunsets cost nothing, and the money saved buys the boat day that turns out to be the best of the week.

What earns its keep

A crossing to the uninhabited sacred island offshore, where the archaeology reframes the entire Aegean and the boat ride is half the pleasure. An evening spent deliberately lost in Chora's lanes, which defeat any attempt at a straight line. One long lunch at a taverna on the fishing quay. And a single beach club, chosen on purpose, for the theatre of it.

Since the better rooms and the good boat seats in June and September go early, comparing current stay and experience options before fixing dates is worth the half hour.
