How many days do you need in Santorini?

Three full days, and four if you intend to swim as well as sail. That is enough because Santorini is not a collection of places to be worked through — it is one object, the flooded crater, and you are only ever choosing where to stand in relation to it. The rim itself takes a day. Everything after that is a departure from the rim, and each extra day buys exactly one.

Day one belongs to the cliff

The rim is a single continuous thing, and walking a stretch of it shows why the island looks the way it does. Fira to Oia is the well-known section, done in a morning by most people who try it, exposed for nearly all of it, and best begun early. Add a sunset at the far end and the first day is full without a car, a boat or a ticket.

That is also the day the island is most crowded, because it is the day everyone else is having too. The ships in the caldera unload into the same villages on the same schedule, so the hours you choose matter more than the route.

Day two is why the island is worth more than a stopover

From the water, the cliffs read as what they actually are — the inside wall of a volcano, striped in ash and lava, with the red and white shores tucked underneath. Day three goes inland, where the crowd does not

The centre and south of the island are farmland: low vines trained into baskets against the wind, small villages that keep ordinary hours, and the excavated town at Akrotiri under its roof. Day four, and where it stops paying

The fourth day is the beach day, on the flat south-east shore. Cut it if you must — but a swim from a dark-sand beach with a taverna behind it is a different experience from a swim off a boat, and the island is small enough that getting there costs nothing.

Beyond five nights the returns thin quickly. Distances here are short, the bus network runs from a single hub, and a longer stay does not unlock a new region — it lets you repeat a day you liked, more slowly, which is a good reason to stay and a poor reason to plan.
