The best time to visit Santorini
Where the caldera turns every sunset into a private performance.
Late May into June, or September into the first half of October. Both windows give warm water, a fully open island and light worth getting up for, and both sit outside July and August. On this island the day-visitor traffic is the variable that decides whether a morning is pleasant or a queue.
Two crowds, and they do not move together
Santorini has two overlapping high seasons, and separating them is most of the planning. There are the people staying here, whose numbers rise and fall with the hotel calendar; and there are the people arriving for the day from ships anchored in the caldera, who come ashore in a block, walk the same short stretch of cliff, and are gone by evening.
The second crowd is the one that makes the island feel overwhelmed, and it is concentrated by hours as much as by months — mid-morning to late afternoon, on the rim between Fira and Oia. It thins earlier in the year than the hotel season does, which is why the shoulders here are worth having: in late September the water is still warm, the restaurants are all open, and the middle of the day has handed the cliff back.
Wind is the other lever, and it works in your favour. A hard northerly through high summer can stop the tenders altogether, and a ship that cannot land its passengers simply carries on. Nobody plans a holiday around that, but it explains why two consecutive August days can feel like different islands.

What each window is actually for
Come in late spring for the land: the interior is green, the villages are walkable in the middle of the day, and the walk from Fira to Oia along the rim is a pleasure rather than an endurance test. Come in early autumn for the water, which is holding everything the summer put into it while the air has stopped being punishing.
October rewards checking what stays open rather than assuming. Somewhere like Pegasus Suites & Spa keeps its pool going past the end of the summer, which is the difference between an October stay that works and one spent looking at a covered terrace. It is also a good month for the things that are not the view at all — a Santorini Wine Adventure with 12 Wine Tastings, Tapas and Sunset lands better after the harvest than in the middle of a hot August afternoon.
High summer is not a mistake, but it should be a deliberate choice. If it has to be July or August, the answer is to invert the day: swim and walk early, take the middle of it indoors or on the water, and give the rim back to the crowd until they have gone.
