Measure the distance from your bed to a landing stage, in minutes on foot. That number settles more about a Como stay than the name of the town does, because scheduled boats are the only transport here that ignores the shore road — and the shore road, narrow and walled and busy from mid-morning, is the thing most likely to spoil a week. Eight minutes from a pier and eight minutes above one are different holidays.
Towns the pier sits inside
Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Argegno are all built around their landings. The boat arrives at the promenade, the promenade is the town, and everything you need is within a few hundred metres of the ticket window. Stay in one of these and a day can be assembled out of crossings: over for lunch, back for the afternoon, out again for the evening, no keys touched.
Varenna adds the railway. The eastern shore carries the Milan line, so a stay there runs on trains and boats and needs no car at all. Argegno is smaller and plainer, and the road up the Intelvi valley starts at its bridge.
Shores where the pier is a walk away
Much of the western shore runs as a ribbon of villas, gardens and hotels strung between landings rather than gathered at them. The position is superb and the walk to the boat is along the road, in the dark, with traffic. Worth knowing before booking something that calls itself lakefront.
What happens after the last boat
Scheduled service stops earlier than dinner habits suggest, and thins further outside high summer. Crossing at night means a private taxi boat or a long drive around the head of the branch — switchbacks, for a distance you could see across. Plan evenings on your own side, or treat the return trip as part of the bill.

It buys the western-shore position without the bill the grand hotels along the same road carry, which is the standing trade on this lake — the view is common property and the frontage is not. Best for couples who want the famous outlook and would rather spend the difference on the boat.
The Smart Entry-Level Option
Hotel Argegno is a village hotel by the ferry pier, with a terrace and a restaurant facing the water and rooms that are simple and say so. Entry level here buys the one thing that is hard to buy any other way, which is a landing stage at the end of the street. Ideal for anyone treating the room as somewhere to sleep between crossings.
Before you book
Availability tightens on the central basin well before it does elsewhere, and the same outlook is priced very differently depending on which side of the road it is sold from, so comparing current stay and experience options across your dates repays an hour.
