Sleep on the far side of the tide. Florence's historic centre is smaller than most people expect — a walk of twenty minutes covers the length of it — so the usual question of how far a room sits from the sights barely applies here. What does apply is when the streets around your door empty out, because this city fills and drains on a daily cycle, and a centre this compressed leaves that cycle nowhere to disperse into.
The tide, and where it reaches
Trains and coaches deliver day visitors from mid-morning onward. They walk a narrow, well-worn circuit — the cathedral, the main square, the old bridge, the two great galleries — and by early evening they have gone. Quarters on that circuit are magnificent and briefly unbearable. Quarters one street off it are neither.
That gives a more useful test for an address than centrality: does anybody actually live there.

Weigh the river as the second variable. Crossing it takes a couple of minutes on foot, which turns the Oltrarno's softer rates into a genuine saving rather than a compromise on position.

Helvetia&Bristol Firenze – Starhotels Collezione, a short walk from the smart shopping street, is the grand Florentine version of the idea: painted ceilings and heavy fabrics rather than a modern reinterpretation of them, with a spa, a hammam and an indoor pool below stairs. Its quarter sits on the circuit but at the calm end of it, and an indoor pool counts for more than it sounds in a city that walks people into the ground.
The Mid-Tier Value Premium Selection
Porta Rossa Hotel Firenze, Colbert Collection occupies a narrow street between the main square and the river, in one of the oldest buildings in the city to have been used continuously for lodging. Comfortably the better-value route to the top of the Florentine market, and the walk to everything is shorter than it is from the grander addresses — which, on a circuit this compressed, is most of the argument.
The Smart Entry-Level Option
Hotel Bodoni, in Santa Croce, is a plain two-star with a lift, a bar and a roof solarium, a walk from the basilica and the leather workshops. Rooms are simple and make no claim otherwise. The quarter is the point: it still works as a neighbourhood once the day visitors have gone back to the station, so your evenings happen around you rather than somewhere you have to travel to.
Letting the length of the stay decide
Nights, not stars, should settle this. Two nights and the circuit is all anyone sees, so sleeping on it is sensible. Four or more and the tide becomes the dominant fact of the trip, at which point a neighbourhood address repays every minute of extra walking.
