Where to stay in Amalfi Coast
Italy's vertical coastline of lemons, tiles and sea light.
Pick the town before you pick the room. Every stay on this coast is arranged along one road cut into a cliff, and the difference between an easy week and an exasperating one is almost entirely a question of where on that line you sleep — how far you are from a boat, how much of the corniche you have to drive, and whether the walk back after dinner is level or vertical.
The road is the constraint, not the distance
Towns here look close together on a map and are not. Coast road traffic moves at the speed of its worst bend: single-carriageway, hemmed by rock on one side and a drop on the other, carrying every coach, hire car and scooter on the same tarmac through the season. A short hop between two villages can take longer than the run in from the airport did. So the useful planning unit is not kilometres but crossings — how many times a day will you have to use that road at all.
Water is the alternative. Amalfi and Positano both have working quays, and through the warm half of the year the boats between the coastal towns are quicker, easier on the nerves and considerably more pleasant than the bus. Basing yourself where a boat leaves changes the shape of an entire week.

Vista d'Amalfi sits a few steps above Amalfi's harbourfront and trades pool acreage for position. Cathedral steps, passeggiata and ferry quay are all a short walk downhill, which makes the road optional rather than obligatory. Well matched to a first visit, where leaving by boat each morning is worth more than a lounger.
The Smart Entry-Level Option
Hotel Zi'Ntonio is in hillside Scala, across the valley from Ravello, with a garden, a terrace and the rarest amenity on this coast — free parking. What it asks in hairpin bends it returns in quiet, in views across the Dragone valley, and in a village getting on with its own life rather than serving yours. Ideal for anyone content to drive or to take the bus down for a swim.
One practical note
Rates here move with the calendar more than with the address, so comparing current stay and experience options across a spread of dates is worth the half hour it takes. And think hard before hiring a car. Parking is scarce, expensive and rarely near your door, while a base with a quay or a bus stop below it usually costs less trouble than the freedom is worth.
