Is Amalfi Coast expensive?

Yes, and the reputation is roughly right — but the premium sits on a narrower base than most people expect, which means a good deal of it can be sidestepped without giving anything up.

The thing that is genuinely scarce

There is almost no flat ground on this coast and no way to make more of it. Everything facing the sea from close to it — a room, a terrace, a table, a lounger — competes for a strip of rock that cannot be extended, and that scarcity rather than glamour sets the price. Step back from the water or up the hillside and the same standard of everything costs conspicuously less, because the constraint no longer applies.

Food is the clearest illustration. A table on the water in Positano or Amalfi is priced as a view with a plate attached. One street back, or up in Scala, or in the inland villages that trade on neither frontage nor a famous name, dinner returns to ordinary Campanian money, and the produce is the same produce. Ravello is the instructive exception — it sits high above all of this and charges as much as anywhere on the coast, because what it sells is a view of its own rather than closeness to the water.

The bill nobody budgets for

Cost here is not only what you sleep in. It is what it takes to arrive, and what it takes to move once you have. No airport sits on this coast and most of its towns have no station, so every visitor buys transport of some kind, and the options differ enormously: a private transfer over the mountains from Naples, a train to Salerno or Sorrento and a boat onward, or the bus.

That is also where the largest single saving hides. Through the warm half of the year the coastal boats are transport and sightseeing at once. Joining the Luxury Amalfi Coast Boat Tour with Swim and Prosecco, a shared departure, is the version of a day on the water most people are actually looking for, and it takes a road journey out of the day as well. Hiring the boat instead — the Amalfi Coast Private Boat Tour with its own captain, or exclusive use of the Cayman Boat charter — is the genuine luxury purchase on this coast, and it behaves like one.

Pushes the week up Brings it down
Sea frontage, at every meal and every night Sleeping and eating one street back or one village along
July and August, and the fortnight around Ferragosto Late spring, and the weeks at either edge of the season
A hire car, its fuel and somewhere to leave it Boats and buses, with a base you can walk out of
Private transfers in both directions Rail to Salerno or Sorrento, then water
Hiring a boat for your own party Joining a shared departure along the same coastline

The three tiers

The Aspirational Luxury Pick

Hotel Raito above Vietri sul Mare, with its sea-view pool and wellness floor, paired with a chartered day on the water. Nothing is shared and nothing is queued for, and the money goes on exclusivity rather than on distance from the crowd, since Vietri supplies that anyway.

The Mid-Tier Value Premium Selection

Vista d'Amalfi, a few steps up from the harbourfront, with the ferry quay downhill. Its room is the mid-price object and the position does the rest of the work: transport leaves the budget almost entirely because you walk to it, and what that saves pays for one proper day at sea.

The Smart Entry-Level Option

Hotel Zi'Ntonio in Scala, family-run, with a garden and free parking — the amenity that costs most elsewhere along here. Add a shared boat departure and a week comes in at a fraction of the same week on the waterfront, looking at an identical coastline from a quieter angle.

Worth doing before you book

Rates swing hard across the calendar, so comparing current stay and experience options over a spread of dates is worth the half hour. Where to base yourself, and what each month is actually like, have pages of their own.
