Amalfi Coast in October
Italy's vertical coastline of lemons, tiles and sea light.
October turns the Amalfi Coast from a sea trip into a walking one, and a visitor who plans for the first will spend half the month indoors feeling cheated. The water is still warmer than anything spring offers, with its annual peak well behind it, and there will be swimming days. There will also be rain, because autumn here is genuinely wet, and the trip works when the land is the plan and the sea is the bonus.
What the month is doing
Two things change at once. Crowds fall away sharply once the first weeks are past — the day coaches thin, the corniche loosens, and towns that were queueing in August start behaving like places where people live. At the same time the weather stops being reliable. Campanian autumn rain arrives in short heavy bursts rather than grey drizzle, which is easier to work around than it sounds, but it does mean an itinerary with no indoor half is a fragile itinerary.
The season is also winding down around you. Boats along the coast keep running through much of the month and then stop for winter; some hotels and beach clubs close as the month ends. Nothing about that is sudden, and none of it affects the towns that work year-round, but a late-October booking should be checked rather than assumed.
The month rewards the walking
This is the coastline's other life, and the heat of high summer makes it unusable. The path between Agerola and Nocelle, running the ridge high above Positano, is the famous one and is at its best in weather like this — cool air, long visibility, and terraces below rather than sea glare. Above Amalfi, the valley behind the town climbs through ferns and old paper mills to water that is actually running again after the summer. Behind the coast entirely, the hills are picking grapes.

Who the month suits
Anyone who would rather see the coast working than see it performing. Walkers, obviously. Cooks and eaters, because this is when a kitchen has time for you. Couples, because the evenings empty early and the towns are quiet by the standards of any other month with warm water in it.
It suits a family less well, for the same reason it suits everyone else — the wet half needs somewhere for children to be, and this coast has little of that indoors. It suits a first visit only if you are content to lose a day or two of the plan.
Getting on the water while you still can
