Base a first visit in Ibiza Town or Santa Eulària. A quiet week belongs in the north or the farmed interior, and the club calendar in the stretch between the harbour and Playa d'en Bossa. The island is small enough that no base is far from anything by car, and different enough from one shore to the next that the base still decides the week.
Ibiza Town and the harbour
Dalt Vila, the walled upper town, is steep, cobbled and quiet at night once the day visitors go down. Below it, La Marina and Sa Penya are the busy version: shops, restaurants and late tables. Across the harbour, Marina Botafoch trades the old stone for a promenade and yacht berths, with Talamanca's sandy bay just beyond. Ferries to Formentera leave from the port, and a car becomes optional rather than essential.
Playa d'en Bossa
South of town, a long beach backed by hotels, day clubs and the island's big night venues. Sleep here only if the nights are the reason for the trip. The airport is close, and the approach path runs over the southern end.
Sant Antoni and the west
Sant Antoni's bay is loud in summer and draws a young crowd, while the coves to its north and the cliffs to its south are where the sunset trade gets quieter and more expensive. The west coast faces the evening, which is the whole argument for it.
Santa Eulària and the east
A promenade town with a working centre, a river mouth and a run of family beaches nearby. It stays open longer into the shoulder months than the resort strips, and it suits anyone who wants a restaurant street within a walk and a calm night.
The north and the interior
Pine, terraced farmland, small villages and coves at the end of long roads. There are few large hotels. What you find instead are converted farmhouses, many run as agroturismos, a Balearic category of rural hotel. A car is not negotiable up here.

Where to stay
Splurge
Money goes furthest on privacy: a villa with its own pool in the hills above the southwestern coves, or a restored finca in the interior run as a small hotel. Both put distance between you and the season, and both assume you will drive to dinner. A harbour-front suite at Marina Botafoch is the alternative for travellers who want the town on foot.
Mid-range
A small hotel in or just below Dalt Vila, or on the Santa Eulària seafront, buys the walkable version of the island without villa logistics. You give up space and a private pool; you keep the evening within reach and a hire car becomes a day-trip decision rather than a daily one.
Good value
Apartments in Es Canar or the bays north of Sant Antoni, and the modest family-run hostals in the villages, are where rates ease. The saving is real in June and September, and it is paid for in driving time and a kitchen you will actually use.
Rates on this island move sharply between the peak and the shoulder weeks, so comparing current stay and experience options across your exact dates is worth doing before choosing an area.
