October on this island is two months sharing one name. The first half is still summer by the sea's reckoning, with water warm enough for long swims and most beach restaurants open; the second half is the start of the off-season, when the clubs have held their closing parties, a good share of hotels lock up and the island goes back to the people who live on it.
The first fortnight
Book the early part of the month if the sea is the point. Days are still long and settled more often than not, the coves have room on the sand again, and the boats that run day trips and private charters are working rather than laid up. A half-day on the Private Half Day Boat Charter in Traditional Balearic Yacht fits this stretch well: four hours on a renovated Balearic boat, with snorkelling gear and paddleboards aboard, and the crew can book a restaurant ashore since food is not provided.
The last of the season's big nights fall around here too. If a closing party is the reason for the trip, check the dates before anything else, because that calendar moves from year to year and a week out either way changes what the island is like after dark.
The second fortnight
After the middle of the month the island changes gear. Beach bars pack away, ferry and flight schedules thin, and the clocks go back on the last Sunday of the month, which takes an hour of evening light at a stroke. What remains is a quieter, greener place: autumn rain, when it comes, tends to arrive in short heavy bursts that clear the dust off the terraces rather than in grey days on end.
That suits walking, cycling and the interior. The farmed middle of the island, with its fig trees, almond terraces and whitewashed churches, is pleasanter on foot now than at any point since spring, and the villages have their own rhythm back.
Evenings
Sunset comes early enough that a day can end with it rather than run past it. The Ibiza en 4x4: Es Vedra, calas y puesta de sol day finishes above Cala Comte at sundown after a swim at Cala Tarida, which in October means an early return and a late dinner rather than a long night. In town, the Ibiza: Evening Walking Tour in Dalt Vila with a Glass of Sangria takes the walls and the cathedral in the cooler hours; it is a walk outdoors, so it is a dry-evening plan rather than a fallback for rain.
Where to sleep this month
Inland and northern bases make more sense in October than in August, because the reason to sleep near the beach clubs has gone. Can Lluc Boutique Country Hotel & Villas, a member of Beyond Green, on the road from Sant Rafel to Santa Agnès, has a spa and sauna alongside its saltwater pool, which covers the days that are better spent indoors. Further north, Valley Club - Agroturismo Ibiza near Sant Joan de Labritja is a countryside base close to the walking. Check that a property is still open for your exact dates: closures cluster in the second half of the month.
| Part of the month | Sea and weather | What is open | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early October | Warm sea, settled spells, long afternoons | Most beach restaurants, boats, the last club nights | Swimmers, sailors, a closing party |
| Mid October | Cooling evenings, the first autumn rain | Towns and villages fully, the beach strip partly | Couples, a mixed week |
| Late October | Short days after the clocks change, showers between clear days | Towns, inland hotels, fewer flights | Walkers, cyclists, a quiet island |
Comparing current stay and experience options matters more this month than in summer, because what is running in the first week may be shut by the last.
