Choose your shore before you choose your hotel. Bled is small enough that no address is far from anything, so the usual question of distance barely applies — but the lake has two sides with quite different temperaments, and which one you wake up on sets the shape of the day more than the number of stars over the door does.
The north shore is the town
Everything civic sits along the northern bank: the promenade, the bus stops, the shops, and the road that carries the coaches in from the capital and the airport. Stay here and you can leave your car where it is for three days. You also sleep inside the day-visitor pattern, which builds from mid-morning, concentrates on this stretch of path, and clears by evening. Light sleepers should ask which way the room faces.
The castle stands on the cliff directly above, so the north shore is also where the short, steep walks start.
The south shore is the quiet one
Cross to the wooded side and the register changes. There are fewer buildings and no through traffic to speak of, and the slope drops into shadow under the ridge behind it while the town bank opposite is still lit. Viewpoint paths climb that ridge, which puts the photograph everyone comes for about half an hour from your door. The trade is that dinner, a chemist or a bus means walking round, and the full circuit is an hour and a half on foot for anyone not hurrying.
Uphill, and down the valley
Above the lake the streets climb into ordinary residential Bled, where gardens get bigger and the walk down to the water becomes part of the morning rather than an errand. Further out, the villages down the valley trade the lake view entirely for space and calm, and they want a car.

The seasons change this calculation and are worth their own look. Availability on the lakefront tightens well ahead of the summer months, so comparing current stay and experience options across your dates before settling on a side is time well spent.
Where to stay
Splurge
Hotel Park sits on Cesta Svobode, the lake road the shore path runs along, with an indoor pool, a spa and a terrace. It is an address for travellers who want the water outside the door and want to walk to it in a dressing gown rather than drive. Being on the town side, it is also inside the day rhythm described above.
Mid-range
Old Bled House stands on Zagoriška, back from the water, with a restaurant downstairs and parking at the door. You lose the lake from the window and keep the five-minute walk to it, plus a quieter night and somewhere to eat when nobody wants to go out again.
Good value
Garni Hotel Berc is a family garni on Pod Stražo with a garden, a sun terrace and its own parking. Breakfast, a bed and the lake path close by is the whole proposition, which is the right proposition for anyone treating Bled as a base for the valley beyond it.
