Where to stay in Kotor
A walled town at the end of the Adriatic's most dramatic bay.
Stay on the water just north of the walls, in Dobrota or the streets between it and the old town, unless waking up inside the town itself is the point of the trip. Inside the walls buys the lanes at both ends of the day. The shore beyond buys a view of the bay, a larger room and a quieter night, for a walk of a few minutes more each way.

Inside the walls
The old town is car-free, paved in stone and small enough to cross on foot in a few minutes. Sleeping here means having the lanes before the cruise passengers come ashore and after they leave, which is the whole argument for it. The case against is practical: bags go in by hand over polished paving, rooms in old buildings run small, and the squares carry sound well into a summer night.
Dobrota and the north shore
North of the walls the road follows the water past old captains' houses, small hotels and apartments. The walk into town is flat and runs beside the bay, and the further along you go, the larger the room and the longer the view back towards the fortress. For a first visit, start looking here.
Škaljari and the south edge
Behind and to the south of the old town is a residential quarter of apartments and guesthouses, close to the bus station and a short walk from the gates. It is convenient for a night or two, and from most of its windows you see the town's back streets and the mountain rather than the water.
Across the water and around the bay
Muo and Prčanj, on the opposite shore, look back at the town and its walls from a distance. Perast, further round the bay to the north-west, is a baroque village with boats out to the islet churches and very little happening after dark. All three need a car, a taxi or a bus for dinner in Kotor. Tivat, over the hill, is a different proposition again: a marina town beside the airport, with newer hotels and a longer drive back.
| Area | Suits | The trade |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the walls | Early mornings and late evenings in the old town | Small rooms, noise, carrying bags over stone |
| Dobrota and the north shore | A first visit, a flat walk into town | A short walk each way |
| Škaljari | A short stay, the bus station | Little view of the bay |
| Muo, Prčanj, Perast | Quiet, the view of the town | A drive or a bus for dinner |
| Tivat | The airport, the marina | Kotor is a trip rather than a walk |
Where to stay
Splurge
HUMA Kotor Bay Hotel and Villas stands on the waterfront at Dobrota, north of the old town, and makes the case for sleeping beside the bay rather than in the town. There is a spa, a private beach area and an outdoor pool that opens for the season, so a hot afternoon goes on the water's edge instead of in the crowd. The walls are a walk along the shore.
Mid-range
Hotel Vardar faces Trg od Oružja, the square just inside the main gate, which puts the walled town on the doorstep from first light to last. A sauna and a hammam cover the evening once the day visitors have gone back to their ships. Accept the square's noise as part of what the room costs.
Good value
Viktor Rooms, on Marovina a short walk north of the walls, keeps the old town within reach on foot for less. A shared kitchen and a terrace do the rest of the work: breakfast outside, dinner in town, and a room that exists for sleeping.
Comparing current stay and experience options across your exact dates is worth doing before you settle on an area.
