The best time to visit Elounda, Crete
Crete's quiet gulf of villas, jetties and long lunches.
Here the shoulder months are the actual recommendation rather than a compromise. May, June, September and October are all genuinely good, and the autumn end beats high summer for most of the reasons people come here in the first place.
Why the season stretches
Eastern Crete sits far enough south that spring arrives early and autumn holds on, which pushes the usable season out at both ends. Warm weeks in May are ordinary rather than lucky, and October days are frequently still shirt-sleeve weather.

The autumn case
Sea temperature is the whole argument. Water takes months to warm and then returns the heat slowly, so swimming in September is better than in June by a clear margin while the air has stopped being punishing. October keeps most of that and adds something else: the landscape starts to recover. Hills that spent August the colour of dust take green again after the first rain, and the drive up onto the plateau behind the coast becomes a different journey entirely.
What you trade is a season visibly ending. Some places close from the middle of October, evening air wants a layer, and a wet day turns up occasionally. None of that touches what most visitors are here for.
The spring case
Late spring is the walking half of the year. Gorges have water still running through them, the interior is green and full of flowers, and archaeological sites can be visited at midday without suffering for it. Swimming in May is a brisk business for most people; by June it is straightforwardly warm.
If the plan involves a hire car and the rest of eastern Crete rather than a sunlounger, this is the half of the season to take. The island behind this coast is enormous, and it is far easier to explore before the heat arrives.
The weeks to skip
High summer, given any latitude at all, and the middle of August in particular — heat peaks at the same moment a major Greek holiday puts domestic travellers on the road alongside everyone else. The coast still works then. It simply asks more of you and gives back less.
What else moves the answer
Where you stay changes this calculation, because the difference between the flagship end of the bay and a room in the village runs through everything from breakfast to how often you drive. That is its own question, and worth reading separately. Since availability and value both shift month to month, comparing current stay and experience options across two candidate months rather than one is a useful half hour to spend before booking.
